So... we're talking about:

1) A cop
2) A motion detector/follower/watcher/voyeur

It's temporary QB. Basically I either use it on myself to keep suspicion off or use it on someone who I think is being targeted by the cop.

The obvious day one strategy is for one of you to pull a Darryl and then I flip you. It might be too much of a broadcast though.

Darryl was really antagonistic in the AC game. He basically alienated everyone and, strangely enough, this freed him from suspicion because everyone thought there was no way Mafia could be that brazen. He was also a traitor that had to be investigated/targeted to be turned and so his antagonism had the double effect of making him more likely to be investigated.

Of course it helped him that the Role Cop in our game was also Mafia aligned.

And yes Razmos, that's what I had in mind. The problem is if the cop is an experienced player like Burbeting, he can probably see through the bluff and you'll stay in his sights. I think it might be better if we just laid low on Day 1 and suss out everyone's personalities first before employing any gambits.

I think my strategy is to try and be as much like I was in the last game. I was honest from the very beginning and survived for (nearly) the entire game. There was pretty much never any suspicion that I was Mafia, I was a confirmed town throughout.

That might work in my favour here, because it's the only knowledge of me they have to go off.

In both games I have had town roles, was usually pretty open about what role I had, and have always made accusations against people then ended up not being mafia.

Right now, I'm thinking of claiming to be a sleepwalker if I'm pressed and not make any accusations since, "they hurt the town in the last games, so I'll keep them to myself for now."

At its most basic, what you're trying to do is pretend you're Town, while still working towards Mafia goals. This means you join in discussion, point fingers, reference posts as evidence, "try" to figure out who's Mafia.

As for what our goals are, they include:

1) Making things more confusing for the town. This could be a lot of things, like accusing others (and therefore widening the suspect pool), creating and promoting disagreements, making a lot of noise like useless jokes and side discussion that distract them from actually figuring us out, and sometimes just being silent when there's a lull in activity (silence is the Town killer).

2) Figuring out who are the town Power Roles so we can kill them. One of the best ways is to threaten to lynch someone in order to make them claim their role or just break their spirit so they start behaving erratically (and thus suspiciously).

3) Keeping the heat off of everyone here. Generally, you don't want to overtly say "Well I don't think Haly, Razmos, and QuantumBro are suspicious because of reasons". That just creates a link between all of us the better players can use to suss us out. However, when you do see one of us is at risk, you should throw your vote against someone else, as long as there's an argument against them. This is what I mean by "pretend to be Town". You should be building convincing arguments against Townies even though you know they aren't Mafia so that you can bring them up in discussion and look pro-Town. Similarly, you can defend a Townie from time to time (convincingly) so that if they do get killed, by town or by us, you can go "I told you guys Townie A was a good guy!".

This is a lot to take in, I know, so don't worry about getting it all immediately. This is only my second game of Mafia anyway. As a new player, you have the advantage of getting the benefit of the doubt if you can convince people you're overwhelmed by the complexity of the game. Crab told me that for Mafia, it's important to pick a persona and stick with it, and the best persona to choose is simply yourself. Imagine what you would do if you didn't have access to all our information and you'll get an idea of how you "should' behave.

I believe it's best if you just start by keeping quiet and observing and asking a question from time to time. In fact, I kind of wish I didn't write all this up so you can play the newbie authentically but I figure it's best in the long run if you know what you're getting into.

By the way, anyone got some thoughts on the Mission mechanic?

What makes this mechanic a real problem is that by killing someone either on the mission or off it, we make it obvious which group of players has at least one Mafia. Over the course of several of these killings, it'll become extremely obvious who are the common denominators.

I'm thinking we should refrain from killing anyone in the mission in the earlier days. But if I was a Cop, I would volunteer, both to protect myself (killing in the mission is a huge risk for us) and also to investigate people who volunteer, who may be trying to pick him off. So, we give up our chance to kill the Cop in exchange for avoiding the deathtrap of Missions.

My Day 1 play might be to volunteer and then flip my own alignment. I also think we can figure out who's a power role by how often they volunteer. Basically, volunteering is protection.

Oh, I'll also need a role claim in case someone catches me targeting myself.

The first four people to volunteer (or less) go on the mission. If they change their mind , they can unvolunteer, but they lose their place in the queue.

Each night will have a different mission with (potentially) different volunteers.

Ah, I understand how missions work now. I like Haly's idea of him tagging along for the first mission, just gotta make sure you're quick to sign up. As for a role claim, you could try being an armorer.

Mike should definitely carry out all of the kills since he can do them silently.

Ourobolus, is the blocking message someone would receive generic, or will they know it was done by someone on the KGB team?

These are the common informative roles.

Cop learns what a player's alignment is.
Role Cop learns what a player's role is.
Tracker learns who a player targeted, but not what action that player performed.
Watcher learns who targeted a player, but not what actions were performed on them.
Follower learns what action a player performed, but not who that player targeted.
Voyeur learns what actions were performed on a player, but not who targeted them.
Motion Detector learns if any actions were performed by or on a player, but not what they were, or who else was involved.

Because of my ability, we know there's at least a Cop or something that detects alignment. We also know there's no Role Cop because of what our roles are called. Bluffing out of them is almost impossible.

I am confident that there is no Follower, because of the nature of my ability, which makes it a dead giveaway.

That leaves:

Tracker (learn who the target targeted with his action)
Watcher (learn who targeted the target with an action)
Voyeur (learn what action was performed on the target)
Motion Detector (learn if the target performed an action or was targeted)

I wanted to target myself most of the time, but only the Motion Detector will let that slide. I don't think Ouro included a Motion Detector in this game,

The Tracker, especially, will mess with the "fake role" Ron Cadillac, The Used Car Dealer that Ouro provided. Does this mean there's no Tracker? I wouldn't want to risk it. Either way, both the Tracker and the Watcher put me at risk. If they see me targeting myself, I have to claim a protective role like Doctor. I'd like to avoid this if possible because that is one of the worst things you can claim.

A Voyeur is more manageable. It'll look like someone wants to get me out, as long as I don't remain consistent in targeting myself.

So, I need a role that:
1) Targets a single player at a time
2) Has a reason to target themselves (unless I want to give up targeting myself which I don't)
3) Isn't a Doctor

I'm drawing a blank here guys.

Also I want to kill squidyj Night 1 but after his callout of... 3/4th of our team (jesus-fucking-christ) I'm not sure that's advisable. We'll risk getting our names out there unless we can play it off. The players to watch out for are Burbeting and Visualante, who are experienced at this game, and squidyj's playstyle is also very dangerous for us (he forces everyone in his sights to be active).

In my ideal world, burbeting overcommits to his experience and leads a vote on squidyj today because of his drastically more pro-town appearance than everyone else's.

Or, you know. It would actually make sense to target myself repeatedly. Anyone can plainly see that the only role that wants to do so is a Doctor, and no one wants to reveal the Doctor ahead of time.

This will hinge on our Followers/Watchers having a certain level of game awareness, however.

Killing him would be nice, but like Haly said I wouldn't go for him on N1.
Given there are some experience players, should they be the ones to be booted off first for N1?
imo, i would choose an experience player that has been pushing for someone really hard (that's not one of us, to throw the scent away)

As long as squidyj isn't on any of our asses (the list doesn't count), we can afford to let him live. But it's precisely because of this that we need to kill him ASAP. It's too late to do so when he's bothering any of us like he is now for roy.

Our options Night 1 will be, in no particular order:

1) Killing squidyj: Might implicate us, might implicate roy. moderate risk, high reward
2) Killing one of the experienced players Visualante and burbeting: Doesn't sit well with me, I was looking forward to seeing them work as a learning experience . low risk, high reward
3) Killing cabbeh: "as I was printing out the latest numbers on exotic locations to ‘spy’ on". low risk, moderate reward
4) Killing mazre: This might implicate squidyj on D2. low risk, moderate reward
5) Killing someone middle of the road: We can and should choose randomly if we do so, low risk, low reward

I gotta say, I really don't want to be the one to decide who has to leave the game so soon but it's us or them. And, of course, we assign all kills to Mike_Hawk689 as long as he's alive since he's the best killer.

I want to use either Woodhouse and Ron. The problem is their results are not falsifiable in any way, so I can use the names, but I need to come up with a new effect. This is my current plan:

Fakeclaim 1: Woodhouse - The Valet
DEAL: <player> to block them for the night, targets yourself if no one else is targeted.
Counters: General Pressure

You are Woodhouse - The Valet.

You are aligned with ISIS.

Addiction is difficult to overcome. It's so easy to just slip into that heroin-induced coma to get away from the stress of life; Sterling's relentless abuse of your good nature certainly doesn't help. And he was such a nice boy once.

At night, you may PM me the command DEAL: <player> to block them from taking any actions. However, if you don't deal to any other player, then you shoot up by yourself, and this will trigger roles that look for activity and targeting in the night.

This role isn't perfect. Namely, the second self-targeting clause, while flavorful, is bound to set off alarms for our more experienced players (and when it does, one of you should point this out along with whoever first calls me out, likely squidj or burbeting). Once that happens, this is my second claim.

Fakeclaim 2: Nikolai Jakov, the KGB Defector
COVER: <player>, but dies when covering KGB
Counters: Tracker, Watcher, Heightened Pressure

You are Nikolai Jakov, the KGB Defector.

You are aligned with ISIS (technically).

At one point, you realized that all you wanted was to get close to your (supposed) son, Sterling Archer. Even in your exile, you have a vast information network with which you can use to protect him and his fellow agents, hopefully redeeming yourself in Malory's eyes in the process.

At night, you may PM me the command COVER: <player> to protect them from being assassinated. However, if you cover a KGB agent, they will find where you're hiding and kill you.

The second one is more complicated but from Mafiascum's wiki, it seems the best way to use this (look up Weak Doctor) is like a pseudo-Cop, using it aggressively to confirm innocent targets. Of course, I will be making a list of people to confirm, seeing as how we already know who's KGB and who isn't. This is basically what franconp did in the AC games, except he actually had Role Cop. I will be choosing weak players when I'm not trying to frame the strong players and I welcome on input on this front. I will also be protecting myself the first two nights just to prevent the possibility of an early exposure by investigation.

If any of you watch Archer, correct me on any flavor mishaps. It's against the rules, technically, to put my "role PM" in the thread verbatim, but that doesn't mean I don't need to get in character.

Wow those are some nice roles and texts!!
If you want to make it more legit, we can take a hugeeeeeeeee risk by making you look like a prime suspect for death during a night, but not killing anyone for you to confirm that you blocked yourself. Kind of a big stretch, wouldn't recommend it though haha.

Yeah I know the drill Quantum. I actually see it as good cover because we're on a lot of lists together.

And I thought of that Mike but it might be going in too hard on the fake when we don't even need to do it yet. It's in the back of my mind though. We'd have to be very desperate to employ this gambit, which I consider stage 3 of my bluff.

So yeah, squidyj is probably our biggest threat right now, but we should wait a few days before doing anything about it.

Right now I think our best bet is to go after a more experienced person during the night. I'd recommend El Topo or Hobohodo.

haly, you're role writeups are good. I think the second fakeclaim is the better one.

I'd also like to point out the the Ron fakeclaim is a pretty good one. I had that type of role in the very first game and you can get away with having a minimal effect on the game since the only people who will know for sure if someone was switched was the Mafia. It could also work for haly since if you get caught targeting yourself, you can just claim you just switched yourself with someone else.

I'm going to claim a weak cop if I'm found out, any ideas on who to block tonight?

It won't work if the tracker sees I targeted only one person when I'm supposed to have targeted two. Also the switcher got brought up in one of the other games and, understandably, people didn't trust it, because it can be very anti-town even in the hands of someone pro-town because it's difficult to use.

Zubz is experienced and roleplaying, it's a longshot with him. YesNo is less experienced and also roleplaying so she has a higher chance of trying to have fun with a named role, would be pretty much perfect if she was Sterling. Cabbeh is completely new and my argument for blocking him is the same for blocking YesNo.

I also might have come up with a way to squidyj look very suspicious, but it's risky as all hell. We would basically have to convince everyone that there is a mastermind in the game.

With a mastermind, none of the mafia members would know who each other are. Squidy immediately asked people to say who they thought mafia members were and is adamant that there are at least 5 members in the mafia. We could play off both of those and raise some doubt.

I'd also think people would be more likely to believe that there would be a mastermind since it fits a spy themed game, and anything that gets town more confused is always good for us.

My bluff will be that the voting for volunteering scheme is basically crowdsourcing noise generation, and, to be honest, I'm not wrong. Hobo feels this way, and so does Burbeting. Roy is in squidy's good graces but this can be turned around if we give him roy's scent. Plus, the fact that Ouro revealed we had our forums open 2 days in advance for preplanning means the people who have more to say about the missions early on had more time to digest it and plan for it. I'm afraid of laying it on too thick though, I'm not a great actor. I've been editing and trimming down all of my posts before throwing them out entirely.

Oh right, I'd just like to say hi to all the people we killed who'll read this once this forum opens and you get to see what we were up to. No hard feelings! Except for you, squidyj, fuck you!

This Mastermind role is a bit hard to digest. I assume that one of the rules of the Masterminded Mafia chat is that no one can publicly reveal their names? Otherwise I don't see the point. It seems like the strength of the role comes from making sure the Mafia don't overthink who their partners are and I don't know why squidy, as a mastermind, would try to circumvent this.

Wait, is the mastermind anti-Mafia? If so then there's no way squidy would broadcast it like the way you suggest.

Depending on how things shake out by the end of Day 1, we might really be able to lynch Squidyj and block one of the suspected power roles. This is the best outcome for us. We just need for there to be enough distance between the HotGate posts and the end of Day 4 so that when people are wondering why squidyj was killed (other than the obvious fact that he is a very strong player), they will look at all the discussion, and not the initial calls, which were haphazard anyway.

Ways this could go wrong:

1) He's the Doctor, but we just try again on the follow day with blocking.

2) He's Bulletproof, I'll need to implicate him with my ability while you guys focus on other targets.

3) He's a Commuter, and we either waste another night trying again or are forced to leave him there.

The chances of any of these three happening are very low. It's just something to be prepared for.

He's sleeping. He goes dark at approximately 4-6PM EST (9-11PM for his England time).

I don't know how I'm going to play this. I wanted to make a deflection post but I don't know whether or not to defend Razmos. If I don't address Razmos, squidyj will just ask why I'm ignoring the problem of Razmos seeing as how we were in the same game together. If I do, then squidyj gets a link and if Razmos gets lynched I'm next, since Seath probably triggers no alarms for him whatsoever. My defense would simply be that Razmos' behavior is consistent with what I know of him, and that I cannot completely separate what I learned last game from this game.

Right now I'm just going to go dark and hope it peters out, as the thread is already going into a lull. I'm glad squidyj is insistent on the voting shit, because we'll get a few more days worth of nonsense out of that, especially if he and Palmer goes head to head.

Even if I didn't participate, I feel that most of the conversation is going around how we pick the volunteers for the mission. So here's my take in the missions. As this give a small twist, I kinda like it since it resembles Avalon, but also since you get better chances at finding the KGB. For example, if two or more mafia are in the missions, at least one will unvolunteer to lower the chances of being read/caught by any power role.
Going to my first assumptions in my few posts, I still believe one mafia/KGB is one of the first four. Why? Again, due to the fact that Ouro gave them a couple of days to strategize. I believe they probably had more insight on these missions that we currently due. They probably understood the whole concept way before us and where able to stagger their volunteering to make sure to be in every mission they can to keep an eye on everyone. I'm sure most people remember that the gossip chats in AC had many role claims. (Though I don't know if they were completely true because I didnt read the side chats.)
Keeping in mind that missions were understood by mafia/KGB, they knew who to volunteer and when. Meaning that any people who are asking for a complete change of the volunteering process are good in my book, since this flushes the strategy the mafia/KGB probably set up before Malory quickly fired the trigger to the start of this game.
I do find it pretty suspicious that Mazre was insanely fast to volunteer. Did he get a notice before all of us in their private chat? Or was he just lucky with the timing?"

I'm just here to push Squidyj out of it in the event we do get a Mazre/Tiger kill or one of them devolunteers at the last moment.

Also I think there's a neutral party. Yesno is right, we're kind of outnumbered at 4. Star Wars had 5/23 with 2 neutrals. Animal Crossing had 4.5/22 (ultron and franconp was basically one person even if they behaved as two). Those ranges are between 20-25% which is reasonable for online mafia. Us? 4/23, which is almost 1/6th, and we don't even have a flipper like Darryl, nor particularly strong roles.

That's a crazy idea.. I love it.
I feel like squidy is just a regular drone, with nothing to lose, so he's that talkative. If he gets investigated he doesn`t really care since it backs him up. After what just happened with him pushing for visualante, I'm in for the framing of squidy. If I were to investigated someone it has to be squidy.

Burbeting: Also a good choice but I'm reluctant, one of the reasons I was excited about this game was watching someone experienced at work, but I didn't expect to be Mafia, also he had some shit to say about me along with squidy

YesNo: Possible, she made it to the end of SW because, I think, her roleplaying and enthusiasm seems so genuine and harmless (although this might not work with squid and darryl around), no connection to us

After running through the thread once more, I have to agree that roy and burbeting would be bad lynch targets at this point in time.

El topo and cabbeh have given off mixed vibes, so I would let them stick around for a few more days.

So that leaves Hobo, YesNo, and Ezekel. Hobo and YesNo have both been pretty off with their guesses for KGB, so I don't think it's that big of a risk to keep them around.

So, I'd have to go with Ezekel since he did say he was going to post a report on everyone once the next day came and I think it's in our best interest to stop that from happening. Plus it points the finger at cooljeanius, since the two were at each others necks during the day. So that's who I'm going with.

Trying to decide between el topo and squidyj for who to block right now.

I agree with your reasoning for Ezekel, but I can see it backfiring in one way: Ezekel had a non-spectacular day 1. The only ones who are actually familiar with his posting style in the AC thread are AC players. Ironically, the AC players are in the best position to recognize that.

It would be a bit of stretch to claim KGB killed Ezekel based on reputation rather than KGB having a few AC players themselves. It's possible to turn this onto the other AC players, but squidy will never fall for it, because me and Razmos are his two main AC scum-reads.

Ultimately, this comes down to squidy, once again. Maybe I'm overestimating him, but I'm too paranoid to let it go.

TheGoddamn: Believes mafia is one of the first people to volunteer. Mainly inactive due to time zone. Post 719 is all about how he is going to vote soon with no other contribution. Post 729, he gives slack to new players such as Arkos and Tiger and believe Palmer is townie, votes for Mazre based on volunteering first. Mainly fluffing posts, keeps bringing up timezone as reason for low posts. Suspicious about Haly, squidyj, seath and QB because of their votes against cooljeanius and Visualnte. Voted for Tiger, because other people were pushing for other people? (post 1041) Sounds anti-town since he's trying to scatter votes = more chances of tie. No other concrete reasoning on voting for Tiger. Threat level is low, although suspicious about 2 of us, doesn't have any outstanding evidence on us. More likely to be suspicious about squidyj after the lynch.

roytheone: First posts are to understand the missions, following by suggesting a democratic way for volunteers, trying to stop KGB from exploiting the missions. Lists Haly, Mazre, Palmer, Seath and Arkos for early volunteering and KGB needs to have someone in the missions to kill or track night chat.
Votes for me for inactivity. Explains that although he is suspicious of Palmer, he doesn't want to vote because of the fact that experience players can give more to the town on the long run with more information from possible power roles. Haly is a low-priority on his list. Top 3: Seath for fluffing too much, Septimus prime for asking too many questions and me for inactivity and disagreeing with most my posts. Voted for Seath, said he is ok with his vote and will vote for Tiger if there's a tie. Ends up voting for Visualante2. (Inconsistency)

Arkos: Post #272, highly suggests he has a role? ability to kill someone? Neutral or town? But he says he's a drone. Choking machine in the lab (Cheryl?) Goes to town against squidyj. Post 1100 refers to the mission cooler, I think it refers to an episode of archer where they were fighting off crocs or aligators? Most likely an Archer line in that episode. He could be Archer, with power of killing 1 player per night or per game as the main character.

Depends... But we're not going to try to kill him for a while I think. Is he's pure bulletproof (it's a passive, so it can't be blocked) and we're stuck with him until he's lynched.

I think he might be an odd commuter though. He didn't bother volunteering day 1 because he knew he was safe, but this time he snap volunteered. If he thought he dodged a kill, then that would explain it.

No. We don't need to kill every town. We just need 50:50 ratio to win the game. It doesn't matter if Ezekel makes it to the end as long as his guesses aren't correct. The worst part is that we wasted a night but considering they also killed a doctor it balances out. And, now that he's claimed (prematurely), we won't waste any more kills on him. The next time we can get a hold of him outside of the mission he dies, guaranteed.

Although now I realize that by killing him, we reveal which group Katya is in so there's some risk in that. I think the best time to do it is when he doesn't make it into the mission and one of us does. Will be a bit hard to orchestrate though, so we'll take the shot when we can get it.

Try volunteering next day, Awesome, if you're in the right time zone to camp out the opening. And if someone asks, just say you want to stay in the game for 2 days at least or something to that effect.

I wonder who the cop is? It'll be really bad if it's Mazre or Palmer and they're just checking one by one the people who volunteer. I really hope the role went to a novice. It's a bit overwhelming if all the roles went to strong players (Visualante2 would've been strong, I believe, had he survived Day 1).

Well for one, don't go after squidy. If he turns his eye on you I don't think you can brush it off. Go for an easier target like Seath or Septimus. Although, you need to look more proactive (or just look sufficiently disinterested) so that people don't wonder why you're accusing Septimus despite being less active.

Really, it's not in our favor to go after the strong players in the day. Let the town handle that. We'll kill the strong players at night when we need to.

Cabbeh and Arkos claimed to be drones, before Ouro added the example pm role to the thread, Time stamps confirms them. Ezekel is most probably Archer, since I sent the kill message and nothing happened that night.. Only QB can kill him by «blocking» his role.
Other power roles includes an investigator, watcher and/or tracker.

Regarding Razmos and Possum:
The former got 23 posts, excused himself with work and talked a bit about AC game. He was confronted especially by squidyj. Who himself struck me as very suspicious. Maybe he needs to go, but I have to check Day3 again and see what his moves were.

Possum introduced himself, placed a vote on Darryl and left. 5 posts. Nothing to get caught on. I don't like Darryl, he survived the previous season close to winning. He continues to be aggressive and just scares everybody off. In my book he is very experienced and needs to go rather soon.

Yeah, Haly has to send me the FRAME command. Any of you can send the KILL command, though Mike_Hawk has a passive role which allows him to kill without being detected. QB has to send me the BLOCK command.

Who to kill? My favourites are:

squidyj - would cast too much suspicion on us, maybe we can get him lynched

kristoffer - very active, annoys a lot of people, maybe lynch

cabbeh - more or less confirmed townie, is there a way a neutral or power role knew about "drone" before ourobs edit?

YNNY - pro town, very reasonable, gets people on her side, needs to be shut down sometime

Darryl - fuck it, let's kill him. He was on mission 1&2, close to be in 3, will try to go on missions again, now is our chance. It will only cause trouble if we let him alive.

I doubt it and what will come will come. I know we have a cop and a watcher/tracker but they've been laying low. Hell, they might even be Mazre and Palmer, who we can't kill. But they also neutered themselves so it doesn't really matter.

Blocking Septimus has nothing to do with lynching him, right? He won't be able to check on people, meaning no useful information for a possible claim ~ makes it easier to get him lynched when the town folk won't believe him.
