I'd recommend reading the Animal Crossing thread: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1044457

In that thread, people brought suspicion upon themselves by recommending who to evict first. We should just keep our heads low for the first day. Vote NO DETAIN and make an emotional appeal to keeping our fellow rebels alive if others make the statistical argument for eviction.

I think it's actually a huge asset that we haven't participated before. People hold grudges from previous games and seem to be more suspicious of people they know. I'm gonna play up the newbie element a lot - "has this worked before?", rule clarification from a town perspective, etc. Don't overdo it, of course.

Not entirely sure but I think there are at least some non-town or mafia roles in this game.

But anyway what's our game plan? Should we talk to each other often or not?

Also in the last game people noticed mafia posting and voting one after the other in bunches, so we need to make sure we avoid this.

I definitely don't want to bring attention to myself, leaving myself to the middle of the pact, not posting too much but not getting eyes on me for posting too little.

We do need a back-up role because if someone can see what we do during the night while one of us is killing somebody then questions will arise.

Those are awfully strong roles to take up. I feel that they would take a whole lot of attention in your direction. But hopefully it won't come to that! I hope somebody brings attention to themselves that isn't one of our fellow mafia, because someone inevitably will.

Okay - I agree with keeping things simple at first. we might have to come up with false roles later on, but IIRC that claim led to the demise of one of the mafiosi in the last game. so we gotta be really careful when choosing those. I propose that we post all our LIES here to have them double and triple-checked.
I also agree that there's no need to come up with elaborate plans in the starting phase. everyone vote as they seem fit.

As for my Special Ability: I'm a Thief - I can steal Blasters, Shields & whatever gimmick MattyG came up with from the rebels and use those items later on.

Here's the general outline for how I plan to use my spooky voice ability. On night 1, it will say that it is a cop and ask who it should investigate. Every time it investigates someone it will say the person was a town. If spooky voice says somebody is town and it's revealed that they are actually mafia, spooky voice can claim that people might be able to hide their alignment (which is true of Oceanic).

I just read through the Role-PM again and it's just blasters and shields.

Regarding your message: i feel like even "I'm a cop" is too much detail. I'd play it slow. Unless something come ups, my first message would simply be ("you are not alone") to let them know someone is out there. You can go for a specific role later on, but at first I'd keep it as simple as possible. The lies will stack up rather quickly anyway

Makai - Sure, the voice is anonymous - but it's more helpful to us if if the town has trust in it? Adding as few lies as possible makes it simpler for us. And it would allow you to be more flexible. Maybe it will be useful to claim another role later on?
I don't think we should add a detail to a lie if we don't need said detail yet.

Well, consider if the voice were actually from a cop. What reason would you have to conceal that fact? I'd be reporting everyone I investigate ASAP. I think it will be harder for the voice to role-claim later if it waits.

And if the voice were from a generic rebel, then why should anybody think anything of it? It's just some guy that knows as much as anyone else. The cop is more trust worthy.

The amount of days the game lasts matters, but if it's too long I can just not send out a message every day. The messages fail sometimes or whatever.

Matt : Okay. But I can use them the following nights (one time use I guess?). Shield is pretty clear, but what's the blaster for? is it a passive ability (like shooting an attacker at night) or could it be also used actively to off someone (in addition to our Hutt-Kill).

Makai : I'm not that experienced, but in a real-life/real-time Mafia game with all players in the same room, the "We lynch day 1" approach is the most fun IMO. But in that setting you can read people and their reactions. Forum mafia is a much slower burn and I sincerely believe that it is wrong for the town to kill randomly on Day 1.

I'll try to take on the role of innocent Commoner for als long as I can, hence my argument for not lynching. But I will have to find a role to claim if I get caught stealing/visiting.

@raindoc Due to game balace, you can only have one item at a time.

For example, if you steal a shield, you'll have that in your inventory until someone attacks you, at which point it will be used. If you still have an item in your inventory when you try to steal another item though your current item will be replaced with the new one.

As for the blaster's ability, it's a one use night kill. So the night you use it, you guys will be able to kill 2 people (1 normal Hutt kill and 1 blaster kill).

As I said in the sign-up thread that Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters are due on Maple Street" is very similar to mafia. There is way too much paranoia amongst the rebels. Which isn't exactly a bad thing. There really is no reason to look at us since we haven't really said anything controversial. I do plan on posting more on Day 2 though, since there will be "more data to catch mafia."

@raindoc 1) You wouldn't get the item. It will be given to them at the end of the night phase/beginning of the day phase, while your action will take place during it.

2) It wouldn't protect them, due to them not recieiving it until the end of the night phase/beginning of the day phase.

3) You CAN kill and steal in the same night.

Well, I was away from home most of the day so I been reading up today. I haven't really said a whole lot because as I said before I don't have a lot to say, which is a combination of being fairly new to mafia and my posting style on neogaf in general.

I haven't seen anything jump out as questionable nor did I expect it on the first day. When I look at the vote count it seems people are as unsure as I am, there are votes on 5 different people (including me). But the main reason I haven't voted is because my suspect list is too large as it consists of people that have posted fewer than I have and people that are high volume posters as that is where I believe that mafia would lie.

Lol, they detained their armorer! This will make life slightly easier for us now. The only downside is that we can't steal from them now...

My targets for death are anyone from Blarg, Lord of Castamere, and Terrabyte.

Targets for robbing would be Traube or Blarg. But with the end of exmachina, I'm not sure how much stealing will influence things. Although there may be people that already have blasters/shields as a part of their roles.

Who do you want to kill, raindoc? I think CzarTim is the right person for tonight, but I'm okay with picking another aggressive person. But I definitely think picking a docile or inactive person is a mistake. We should kill of the aggressive people early so the mid-late game goes smoothly. Emotions are way too hot right now and we're playing with fire if we let that continue.

Terrabyte is a pretty good choice considering his out-of-nowhere vote for Palmer. Anybody making gambits need to go.

Lord of Castamere. No direct link to any of us and people pay attention to what he says.
Since they just killed one of their power roles I don't think that TWE is their logical next choice and I hope that killing LoC will make someone bring up that Czar could be Mafia, since LoC once voted for him and the last postings of Czar before the Armorer got lynched were heavily pro-detain.

And I will do the killing. I'll visit two people tonight. LoC (or whoever we choose) for the Kill and someone who's probably being watched to "steal" - might give me an Alibi and you guys won't be connected at all.

I don't think I can steal anything, but I should be able to "visit" other players. my reasoning: if I get spotted visiting someone who is being watched and we don't kill him/her, it might throw the investigator(s) off and I can claim town or neutral power role when SHTF.
if someone is watching me and I start visiting peeps later on but not on day 1, I wouldn't know how to defend myself (why not use it on day one?).

I don't think the risk of getting killed during one of the visits is really high, since we lynched the Armorer, but it is still there.

So... it's a three man decision. I'll kill LoC and "steal" from Traube, if you agree with that.

Hey, I like Blarg! Plus, his play-style helps us out. I thought exmachine64 might have been Hutt because of his hyper-aggressive playstyle early on. TheWorthyEdge would be my number one suspect if I were a rebel. Of course I was wrong about exmachine64, and I am likely wrong about TheWorthyEdge. For this reason, I don't think we should sweat hitting Hutts too much. We really have no good way of verifying their alignment. If we get a clue to their identity, the rebels will surely notice as well, so we shouldn't second-guess ourselves when we pick murder targets. However, if someone receives a spooky message but alters it or does not report it, I will assume he is Hutt.

I just thought I'd drop in and clarify that the "STEAL" action will take place after any "KILL" actions. This is simply because shields would be virtually useless if "STEAL" came first. By the "KILL" action coming first, this allows the shields to do their job and keeps the game balanced.

Clearly town mouthy players are the MOST danger to us. They lead discussion about us and are trusted. Besides the combat buddies are less of a threat than Czar anyway. Czar is a leader. I'm not trying to collect more shields, but to prepare the target(s). A 2 for 1 kill would be nice, but there's no need to rush it and risk "wasting" another night kill.
QB is the only confirmed power role we know of, making him the logical target while we "prepare" the masons.

He's also a risky target, as he's likely to be guarded by the doctor - if there is one. if there was an alternative to QB that would send the lynch mob into over-overdrive I'd gladly pick that, but i really can't come up with a name.

let's look at the "Makai got a shield on N2 and lost it last night due to an attack" story.

What's obviously wrong with that, is that the real recipient (unless it was barry) knows it's a lie. But if he outs himself, we're at least pretty much done with the gimmcks and maybe can even make him look bad.

Anything else? Makai wasn't the obious choice on N2 either, but it's far more likely than QB giving you anything after D3.

Yeah, I have a feeling of the same. Because if it is a cop, I am town. If it is a watcher then he would have seen me murder QB. If it is a doctor I'll claim way too OP and ask why he didn't save QB. The only role that I can think of is someone who can check what someone has (if so why does town have so many roles )

i have no fucking idea, you storming ahead like that fucked up our plans completely.
now both of you are high on their priority list and (much more) sooner than later I'll be alone, for which the blaster would be really usefull, since I could claim to be another armed rebel - and proove it.

if we use the blaster to save you... they'll probably still suspect you, since it makes absolutely no sense that QB gave a blaster to you of all people. we also run the risk to kill one of our own, since there's no way they're stupid enough to let you choose your target and last but not least: i loose the above mentioned cover.

We should continue with whatever lies we see fit but I also think at this point it probably better for us to cut our losses and just have me or makai lynched to have us save face. 1st thing we need to do is decide on what Makai posts next. what should he claim? blaster is the only option i see. maybe it'll save him for a few more days.
OA needs a lot of luck to survive tomorrow, when johnny flips at the end of this day.
maybe a triple kill tonight will cause enough confusion to mislead town once more?

it's going to be really, really hard to do this alone/with just an UI.

so maybe trying to save our team is the better option than trying to keep a sole survivor around? honestly, with all the stuff happening right now in RL i don't think i have it in me to do that.

That would almost assuredly condemn both of us to death (not like they are going to keep me alive tomorrow anyway). But it us worth a shot.

Also I still wonder who the hidden rebel is. If it is one of the more frequent posters then a victory is still possible. However if it is ejawa, zipped, redhood then there is no chance since it seems that their time is coming up after our deaths. Please let it be Absolut, Matt, Czar, or Palmer.

Since everybody's wondering why I killed CzarTim: because I never would have thought that you guys would follow my vote and so I "stole" from him the night before. Since I couldn't be sure about Palmer looking after me (still not entirely convinced) I had to assume that one guy was protected by him and one was shielded by QB on N2. didn't want to risk wasting both of my night kills - hence I had to kill Czar, who I knew wasn't protected by Palmer and had no shield because I checked the night before.
The regular Mafia kill took care of AB's shield, as it seems. Unless he and Palmer are setting up a trap (I'm the paranoid Hutt).
