Originally invented in 1986 as Ма́фия in the U.S.S.R. by Dmitry Davidoff, Mafia is a popular party game of deduction and deception.

The Setup: Town versus Mafia

The game takes place with as few as three players, and up to as many players as you want. (8-10 players is the ideal number for a live game, 20-25
players for an online game) The game is typically overseen by a central moderator, who begins the game by randomly assigning one or more players to
be the "Mafia." (In other versions of the game, these players may also be called by a number of other names, including Werewolves, or simply, "Scum.")
Only the Mafia are aware of their assignments. In most cases they are also told who the other players on the Mafia team are.
The players who are not assigned the Mafia roles are known as "Town" players. Their job during the course of the game will be to discover who is
on the Mafia team.

How to Play: Day versus Night

The game takes place in two "phases." Play typically begins with a "Day" phase, where players talk and interact and attempt to determine who the
Mafia players are. At the end of each day, the players vote on a player to "lynch" or remove from the game. The player who is voted out reveals
their role in the game, (this is known as a "flip") and then is removed from the game. This begins the night phase.
During the night phase, the Mafia select a player to "kill." Once the night phase has ended, the "killed" player reveals their role and is removed
from the game. The day phase begins immediately when the night phase ends.

How to Win: Victory versus Defeat
The game ends in one of two ways:

Town Victory

The Town team wins when no threats to their team remain. This usually means locating and killing all of the Mafia aligned players.

Mafia Victory

The Mafia team wins when the number of Mafia players is equal to or greater than the number of remaining Town players. At this point, they control the vote,
so the game ends automatically in a Mafia victory.

Let's make it weird: Power Roles versus Ordinaries

What we've lined out so far is a very basic game of Mafia. However, there are more ways to spice it up. One such way is to add in special "Power Roles"
on both sides that can affect the outcome of play. One such role is a "Doctor," a typically town-aligned role that can protect a player from the Mafia's
attacks during the night. Another role is the "Cop," who can ask the moderator if a certain player is aligned with the Town or the Mafia, and find out their alignment.
There are many, MANY other roles in Mafia, which can be found in our Glossary of Mafia Roles.
