Ideally I'd like a theme that contains the softest hint at an afterlife being somehow relevant. Example that I probably won't use:
L O S T M A F I A The game takes place just on the plane as its breaking up in mid air. With each vote (I don't know why these chucklefucks are voting each other out of a disintegrating plane) another person is killed. The Afterlife then takes place on the Island. Obviously.
I think a Lost Mafia could be really interesting, but I'm not really feeling it with these mechanics. If anything it makes the afterlife angle too obvious? But it's almost right: take a well known theme with a potential (but not too obvious) afterlife 'area', then focus on a suspiciously narrow event within that theme.
I want the living to be at least suspicious that something is up. I have "everyone is ordinary?" and now "where's the fucking Island?"
That's the aim, no usable ideas yet though

I do have one idea. It doesn't quite achieve the lofty ambitions laid out previously, but I can see it working.
Island Mafia / Tribal Mafia / Whatever
This is a "generic" theme, not tied to any specific tv show or anything.
Based around a small tribe living on an undiscovered island. It is the yearly festival of [insert reasonable-sounding festival name here]. They must select a human sacrifice from among themselves to satisfy their God who lives in the volcano.
Oh, there is a volcano on the island.
Win conditions get a little awkward here, I might make something up about appeasing the volcano God, or just admit that this is a teensy tiny bit Bastard, and not give anyone their win condition just yet.
Ok, all ordinary trying to sacrifice someone for the volcano God. This is going to be very Bastard until the real game gets going. Sorry not sorry.
Whoever gets lynched first won't flip as ordinary. Instead they flip as...
N1 the volcano explodes. Obviously.
Many Islanders die, probably without revealing their role PM (thanks Cthulhu!).
Ok that's pretty much it for Bastardness. It's really all just there for the set up, and things get a lot more sensible from here on.
All the dead ('probably' selected at random, numbers TBD) wake up in the Afterlife thread and receive new role PMs and actual fucking win conditions (hopefully). Everyone is a spirit of some kind. Vote each day to banish a spirit. Banish all Evil Spirits from the island to appease the Volcano God.
Possible mechanic: vote each night to kill a living Islander, bringing them to the afterlife. For this, communication during the night phase might be unrestricted, and these votes may or may not be public (I'm leaning unrestricted + public vote. It means we don't have a real night phase but I don't see that being a bad thing, and this second vote is no less important than the Banishings).
Later: some example roles and more possible mechanics.
I think this set up solves at least problem 1 and 2. Problem3 will be tackled in the roles
