While having the ability to change your display name is one of the more fun aspects of Outer Gafia, we do ask that players in an active game refrain from completely changing their names. This makes it difficult for players to identify who they are playing with.
A simple change that still involves part of your original name, like from "Retro" to "Retro Snake" is acceptable.
A change from "Retro" to "Jack Sparrow" is not.
This rule may be overridden at the digression of the the Game Runner.
Thank you.

Does this apply to people who are dead from an ongoing game? And is it limited solely to games hosted here, or does it apply to people who might have a private Season 4 discussion thread here as well? Also I'm curious, since this works in the shoutbox: GorlakEdit: It works! If you preface the login name with an @ it'll inline it with the current display name.

If you are dead, I see no reason why you should be under the rule of no name changes however, if we play a game where someone gets revived at any point, of course change your name back to something appropriate before you join the land of the living.
If you are here for private discussion like a lovers or scum chat, you also probably won't be under a name restriction but keep in mind two things. If you are playing name shenanigans, people that notice may be wondering why you are doing that if no current game is being hosted here and confusing your teammates does no one any favors when you guys are in the privacy of your own chat.
My two cents, of course, I'm not really the law or anything.
Edit: And, of course, the current game runner may use rules however they wish. If they are more or less strict with this rule, that is their choice and any players should be mindful of their moderator.

Yeah, my concern with the dead name changes was that it might be confusing for people who are either: a) Catching up (Ty4on for example in MGS might be confused with some of the changes, like people talking about Sorian's posts when your name was BEN) or b) Re-reading previous days and trying to piece together links between people. There are workarounds (visit the user's page, or pretend this is twitter and have everyone use @ before a username to link it to the most recent display name), so it's not a huge issue, but it is a concern I wanted to raise.

Actually, yes, you are 100% correct. Searching through the thread would be too much confusion so yeah, I change my stance, if you are in a game, alive or dead, you should always have your real username displayed in some way (yours right now is fine, as an example). A note, if you search for a specific users posts, you will always find them if you use their real name so even when I was BEN, a search of Sorian gave all of my posts that doesn't help if you are just reading through the thread normally though.

Isn't there an argument for ensuring that GAFia names match GAF ones?

Isn't there an argument for ensuring that GAFia names match GAF ones? Well, as long as we're able to tell roughly who is who, I don't think they need to be exactly the same. I view it as being kind of like QT. I'll clarify the rule that your username needs to express who you are on GAF, but as long as we can connect your account here to your account there, I don't see a problem.
